Back in the '30s, '40s, and '50s, the Hollywood studios had in-house orchestras that provided instrumental background music for their movies. But these days, things are done differently in the film industry. A filmmaker can hire someone to program faceless background music on a computer, or he/she might want something more personal -- in other words, real songs that could feature a singer (country, rock, blues, or R&B), a rapper (hip-hop), or an instrumentalist (jazz). Different types of films call for different types of songs; the 2002 film Gang Tapes deals with gang violence in South-Central Los Angeles, and quite appropriately, its soundtrack is dominated by West Coast gangsta rap. Many films that have an inner-city focus favor a combination of rap and urban contemporary, but Gang Tapes offers hardcore rap exclusively -- and most of the selections have an unmistakably California flavor. That includes Above the Law's "Smoke" and the South Central Cartel's "We Gonna Ride" as well as Sir Jinx's "My" and LV & Prodeje's "In the Mood" (which features Coolio). One doesn't have to be familiar with Gang Tapes to find its soundtrack meaningful; this CD can stand on its own whether or not one has seen the movie. The listener does, however, need a strong appreciation of West Coast gangsta rap, although a few of the tunes aren't by California rappers. "What You Got" by New Jersey's Chino XL and "Livin' ah Vida Loca" by New York's Kool Keith are straight-up East Coast. But they're hardcore enough to fit right in, and when all is said and done, the listener has experienced a decent, satisfying hardcore rap compilation that spends most of its time in Southern California but makes some enjoyable East Coast detours on occasion. ~ Alex Henderson
