The great gigolo swindle continues to out-maneuver its electronic-toting contemporaries with the debut album from Lasergun label manager Savas Pascalidis, a svelte follow-up to his steel-bar-bending "Superman," the teutonic highlight of the sixth volume of DJ Hell's International Deejay Gigolo compilations, released in the summer of 2002. Although the eye makeup of the electroclash movement pioneered by the label wore off some time ago, Pascalidis has yet to fall foul of such fashions; his futuristic yet emotive synthscapes are more Carl Craig than Miss Kittin -- operating worlds away from the throwaway tricky disco pimped by Fischerspooner et al. Whether the nods to Prince in "Love Makes U Crazy" or the metropolyptic stings of "Silberland," the album conjures the hope that techno can regain all of the ground it lost to house in the 1990s. ~ Kingsley Marshall
