Review

"The overall portrait, for instance, of upper-class life in Europe before the first World War...perhaps most astute of all is Berger's explanation of how Don Juans succeed."

"...'G' in addition to its vividly portrayed characters and the crashing immediacy of its historical setting, is a complex novel of ideas that sets off in the reader meditations about sex, history and the nature of the novel....'G' belongs to the tradition of George Eliot, Tolstoy, D.H.Lawrence..., the tradition of fallible wisdom, rich, nagging, and unfinished."

Publisher's note

Winner of Britain's prestigious Booker Prize, John Berger's "G". relates the story of a young man forging an energetic sexual career in Europe during the early years of this century. Berger sets his novel against the turbulent backdrop of Garibaldi and the failed revolution of Milanese workers in 1898, the Boer War, and the first flight across the Alps, making "G". a brilliant novel about the search for intimacy in history's private moments.

Explores the intersection of the erotic and the historic through the life and loves of a young man forging an energetic sexual career against the turbulent backdrop of northern Italy in the early decades of this century.

Annotation

John Berger's 1972 erotic novel tells the story of an adventurous young man, his tumultuous life, and especially his many-faceted romantic adventures, in the midst of the chaos of early 20th-century Italy. B won the Booker Prize for this novel, and stirred up controversy when he used his acceptance speech to denounce the Booker organization for their historical colonialism in the West Indies and donated one-half his prize money to the Black Panthers. It was after this event that Berger moved permanently from his native England to the French Alps, where he has lived ever since in a peasant village, writing and farming.
