Review

"[A] brave and ambitious book....Whether, in our hyperdemocratic age, there is a market for such a classical defense of aristocratic rule must be doubtful....Yet it deserves a wide readership. Those who fear that while seeking to impose its will on far-flung countries the American republic may unwittingly follow Rome down the path to imperial perdition will read it with a mixture of admiration and unease."

"...a book with immense relevance for the immediate future of the Middle East..."

"[T]he best attempt at putting a frame around the current world picture that I have yet seen."

Publisher's note

Democracy has reshaped politics, economics, and culture around the world. This provocative book asks, can you have too much of a good thing?
Today we judge the value of every idea, institution, and individual by one test: is it popular? Or, more practically, do the majority of those polled like it? This transformation has affected not just politics but also business, law, culture, and even religion. Every institution and profession in society must democratize or die. Democracy has gone from being a form of government to a way of life.
Like any broad transformation, however, the trends that democracy unleashes are not uniformly benign. Democracy has its dark sides, yet to question it has been to provoke instant criticism that you are "out of sync" with the times. No more. With an easy command of history, philosophy, and current affairs, Zakaria reinterprets our past and outlines our future. Woodrow Wilson said the challenge of the twentieth century was to make the world safe for democracy. This penetrating book challenges us to make democracy safe for the world.

Annotation

Fareed Zakaria presents a devastating account of the essential difference between democracy and liberty. Zakaria clearly shows that democracy is usually not the best form of government for struggling nations, which normally require a strong rule of law in order to enforce individual rights. His historical examples include Western Europe in the early 20th century, where democracy tolerated, and perhaps even encouraged, the rise of fascism, and more recent disasters such as Indonesia, which has seen a tremendous increase in poverty and Islamic fundamentalism since the dictator Suharto stepped down in 1998. Contrarily, Zakaria points out nations such as South Korea that have been able to transfer from an autocracy to a more democratic form of rule after a more prolonged period. He is overtly critical of the United States's long history of blindly forcing democracy on developing nations, either by passively threatening to withhold financial aid, or by actively providing arms and military support to handpicked "democratic" movements, which have often imposed corrupt and brutal regimes, particularly in South America. Named as a Notable Book by the New York Times in 2003.

A New York Times Notable Book for 2003.

Noted journalist and author Zakaria deconstructs many assumptions about democracy as it's practiced today. FUTURE OF FREEDOM reminds us that simply because people can elect their government, it doesn't follow that the elected government will be good. A New York Times Notable Book for 2003.
