Unlike his full-length debut, 2005's moody and seductive TROUBLE IS REAL, the singer-songwriter Johnathan Rice's second album mostly concerns itself with some serious rocking. The chugging "We're All Stuck" is a Hunter S. Thompson-like stream-of-consciousness trip through contemporary America, and the hard-nosed "The End of the Affair," is a folk rock-tinged duet with the indie poster girl Jenny Lewis, but the off-kilter sentimentality of Rice's songwriting finds its best expression in the Dylanesque "Middle of the Road," an edgy, regretful love song.
