Title Note

This discount-priced compilation samples mostly from the Sony Music vaults for soul and funk songs of the 1970s originally released on the Columbia, Epic, and Philadelphia International labels. The exception is Rufus' "Tell Me Something Good," which has been licensed from MCA Records. There are some big hits here, among them seven gold or platinum records and four R&B chart-toppers. There are also ringers. Tower of Power's "You Ought to Be Havin' Fun," a minor chart entry, doesn't really belong with the rest of the material, and, technically speaking, Sly & the Family Stone's "I Want to Take You Higher" is not a funky sound of the soul '70s, having been released in 1969. Also, even though Heat Wave's "The Groove Line" and "Boogie Nights" were big hits -- indeed, the only platinum records here -- giving them two selections out of ten is over-representing this relatively minor act. Nevertheless, for the low price, this compilation delivers a generous amount of quality soul and funk music from the '70s. ~ William Ruhlmann
