Annotation

This is volume one of the action-packed, humorous, and surprisingly poignant shonen manga which inspired a popular anime series. Twelve-year-old Edward and ten-year-old Alphonse Elric attempted to break the laws of alchemy and resurrect their beloved mother from the dead. Edward paid for that mistake with his arm and his leg, and Alphonse became a disembodied spirit trapped within a suit of armor. Now, the two brothers travel the land, punishing corrupt uses of alchemy and searching for the legendary Philosopher's Stone, which may have the power to regenerate their missing body parts. In this installment, they bring down a charlatan preacher who claims to do miracles, a lieutenant tyrannizing over a mining town, and a ruthless gang of train hijackers. The black-and-white art, which reproduces the original Japanese right-to-left format, skillfully portrays the cute-looking characters in fast-moving fight sequences and broadly comic tableaux.
