The Fugs Artist Snapshot:

Tuli Kupfergerg and Ed Sanders were iconclastic, Beat-influenced poets who were in on the start of the '60s counterculture in New York City's East Village. Influenced by folk, rock, and avant garde art, they decided to start their own group, inadvertently planting one of the first seeds of punk rock. Their willfully gritty, amateurish sound was girded by the contributions of freak-folk group the Holy Modal Rounders, and they frankly addressed sex, war, drugs, and more, all with a winning sense of humor. The broke up at the beginning of the '70s, but began sporadic reunion activity in the '80s.

Featuring outtakes from their classic folk-punk debut, the high points of The Fugs' SECOND ALBUM are even more daring and subversive than those sessions. Songs such as "Group Grope" and "Kill For Peace," are somewhat franker than earlier anthems like "I Couldn't Get High" and "Boobs A Lot."

Assisted by an wider range of folk and rock musicians than previously, Tuli Kupferberg and Ed Sanders are more confident of their musical abilities here, and tracks like "Frenzy" and "Dirty Old Man" sound of a piece with both the mid-'60s Greenwich Village folk scene and the punk scene which grew there a decade later. This excellent reissue adds five bonus tracks.
