Review

Q (9/96, pp.129-30) - 5 Stars - Indispensable - "...this four-album set serves to remind the listener that the singer/guitarist's reputation owes everything to his hypnotically powerful music....there is a maturity and artistic depth which belies his tender age..."
Uncut (p.90) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "FRUIT TREE is solidly canonical....Maybe only Robert Johnson has ever undergone such a profound posthumous career revival."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.82) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "Still no one has come close to matching Drake's majesty and, as time rolls on and his reputation swells, it's ever more tragic that he never saw success in his lifetime."

Title Note

This set consists of the 3 albums released before Drake's death in 1974, FIVE LEAVES LEFT, BRYTER LAYTER, and PINK MOON, plus a collection of outtakes and unreleased tracks called TIME OF NO REPLY. It includes a booklet with full lyrics and extensive liner notes by Arthur Lubow.

Personnel includes: Nick Drake (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Richard Thompson (guitar); John Cale (viola, piano, celeste, harpsichord, organ); Clare Lowther (cello); Ray Warleigh (flute, alto saxophone); Lyn Dobson (flute); Paul Harris, Chris McGregor (piano); Tristan Fry (vibraphone, drums); Danny Thompson, Dave Pegg, Ed Carter (bass); Mike Kowalski, Dave Mattacks (drums); Rocki Dzidzornu (congas); Pat Arnold, Doris Troy (background vocals).

When Nick Drake's manager and producer, Joe Boyd, sold his company to Island Records in the early 1970s, a now-legendary provision was inserted into the contract: Island could never let Drake's albums fall out of print. For all his talent, Nick Drake sold very few albums in his short lifetime, and many believe his lack of commercial success was a key factor in the depression that would ultimately lead to his death, by an accidental overdose of prescription antidepressants, in 1974; so at the time, Boyd's demand may have seemed curious. But over the decades since his death, Drake has moved from little-known cult figure to a key influence on several generations of folk-rock and indie artists. The first wave of interest came in 1979, when Island released a three-LP box set called FRUIT TREE, which featured all three of Drake's albums--FIVE LEAVES LEFT, BRYTER LAYTER, and PINK MOON--plus a bonus EP of four songs recorded shortly before his death. In 1985, the set was reissued with the EP expanded into a full-length album of rarities that was later reissued separately as TIME OF NO REPLY. That edition appeared on CD for the first time in 1991, but for this 2007 remastered edition, the inessential TIME OF NO REPLY has been left off in favor of a DVD that includes the 2000 documentary A SKIN TOO FEW and a BBC documentary about the singer-songwriter narrated by Brad Pitt. This edition of FRUIT TREE is the first to truly illuminate the person behind the music.
