Review

"The two halves of the narrative aim to echo and complement each other, and when they do Yehoshua achieves a remarkable artistry."

Publisher's note

Leaving her long-time husband at home to cope with their family's everyday needs, Daniela journeys from Tel Aviv to East Africa to mourn the death of her older sister and to confront her grieving brother-in-law, a scientist still struggling with the death of his soldier son in an incident of "friendly fire" on the West Bank.

Annotation

A. B. Yehosua's "duet" novels follow the separate narratives of Amotz and Daniela Yaari, a middle-aged married Israeli couple. Amotz lives a fairly stable life in Tel Aviv; his dramas concern his elevator-repair business and the complications of family and friends. Though the deaths and hardships of the Palestinian occupation resonate in his life, for the most part he lives protected from the crises of the Israeli state. His wife, Daniela, on the other hand, finds herself inextricably drawn into the Palestinian conflict after she goes to visit Yirmi, her brother-in-law in Tanzania. Yirmi has moved to Africa to remove himself from his Jewish heritage, but when his son is killed by "friendly fire" in the West Bank, Daniela and Yirmi travel there to discover the disturbing secrets of his death. Yehosua is one of Israeli's most acclaimed writers; his novel is a powerful look into the physically and morally splintered world of Israeli Jews.
