Product note

The 2005 remastered German digipak version features 12 additional tracks.
Adam Ant's first record without his back-up band The Ants proved to be his strongest album to date, as well as his mainstream commercial breakthrough. Keeping only guitarist Marco Pirroni on hand, Ant seriously backed off on the campy pirate/Indian/tribal-drumming motif that marked his earlier releases. The advent of MTV proved to be fortuitous for the dashing singer. His breakthrough single, "Goody Two Shoes," and its accompanying video got brought Ant a much larger American audience and introduced the libidinous side of the singer, a facet which was to become more pronounced in later releases.
Elsewhere, the album chugs along with a heavy backbeat and piping horns, giving "Friend or Foe," "Place in the Country," and "Crackpot History and the Right to Lie" a percolating feel. Pirroni's 50's style twang guitar is a complementary counterpoint to Ant's British pop stance. "Here Comes the Grump" and "Made of Money" both benefit from his reverb-drenched guitar lines. The latter features a multi-part acapella section, a first for Ant.
