Title Note

The hip-hop instrumental album has yet to be embraced by the American mainstream; with the exception of DJ Shadow's seminal ENDTRODUCING, there haven't been many successful albums featuring the beats and nothing but the beats. But when DJ Cam, the French hip-hop producer supreme known for his contributions in this area, releases an album, people are usually eager to listen.

On THE FRENCH CONNECTION DJ Cam blends a collection of singles from the celebrated Artefact label, which received much deserved credit for furthering a movement within hip-hop promoting artistic excellence over materialism and braggadocio. Standout cuts include "Garance," by Art Ensemble, an experiment in ethereal melodies and offbeat measures in a genre typically defined by rigid syncopation. Shinju Gumi's "Blindwhisper" is a beautiful blend of broken beats, shattered bass, and ethereal strings. Zend Avesta's "One of These Days" is a breathtaking combination of the human voice with looped sonic bliss.
