One of the most important avant-garde jazz saxophonists of the late-20th/early-21st century, David S. Ware played with free-jazz giants like Andrew Cyrille and Cecil Taylor early in his career. With his own group, which often included gifted bassist William Parker and pianist Matthew Shipp, he incorporated the spirit of the '60s free-jazz movement and pushed the boundaries further still. Branford Marsalis's admiration for Ware even got the former a major-label deal in the late '90s, an almost unheard-of phenomenon for such an unconventional artist at that time.
