Review

Entertainment Weekly (7/21/95, p.65) - "...Ziggy refuses to be defined by his last name alone, but he soon eases into the uplifting rhythms that are his birthright." - Rating: A-
NME (Magazine) (7/29/96, p.49) - 6 (out of 10) - "...uncharacteristically heavy....Ziggy still owes a vocal debt to his father, but he's decided to move forward with the times and rely less on reputations....the ghost of a pop sensibility and the prevalent hip-hop synthesis combine for a pleasant listen..."

FREE LIKE WE WANT 2 B was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.

Since releasing their first album, PLAY THE GAME RIGHT, in 1985, Bob Marley's offspring have faithfully carried on his legacy by bringing the tenets of reggae and Rastafarianism to the masses. Eldest son David "Ziggy" Marley fronts this clan (The Melody Makers), and FREE LIKE WE WANT 2 B adds to modern reggae's evolution by fusing it with rock, rap and R&B.

Although Ziggy Marley's name is still at the forefront, the album is very much a family affair, with the spotlight shared by other members of The Melody Makers. Sisters Cedella Marley and Sharon Pendergast, along with Erica Newell, pick up where the Wailers' famed back-up vocalists, the I-Threes, left off, stamping the overall sound of FREE LIKE WE WANT 2 B with rapturous harmonies. Normally utilized as background singers, the trio takes the lead on the bouncy "Today," a first in Melody Makers history. Younger brother Stephen flexes his musical muscle by contributing "Tipsy Dazy," "Keep On" and "Bygones," using a nasal singing style that owes more to Bunny Wailer than it does to his father. The brothers collaborate on "Water And Oil," an old-style rocker that Stephen delivers in a thick Jamaican patois over programming reminiscent of Sly & Robbie's work with Black Uhuru.

Though his siblings have increased their input to the group, Ziggy Marley still does the lion's share of work. Songs like "Power To Move Ya" and the title track show Ziggy incorporating rock guitar and hip-hop beats into the music, while still singing about world peace ("Today") and the lack of a power balance between the industrial nations and the third world ("G7").
