Sporting the cleavage-and-bare-midriff look that's requisite early-21st century pop femme-wear, the Berlin-transplanted, Brazilian-born blonde bombshell drops her sophomore album with all the subtlety of a Pamela Anderson video. While her vocals lack the is-she-or-isn't-she breathlessness of a Britney Spears or Mandy Moore (it's pretty obvious Anastacia isn't, and hasn't been for a while), she does project an unmistakable earthiness and raw sexuality, notably in the album's title track and "Why'd You Lie to Me?" both of which find her in a feisty mood. Pity the fool who'd even think about getting on her bad side.
Anastacia channels Chaka Khan in the Brazilian-inflected rhythms of "Don't Cha Wanna" and shows her quieter, if no less uncompromising side, in "Overdue Goodbye" ("this is a message--pay attention...") which features perhaps the weirdest yet recorded pronunciation of "goodbye," but is nevertheless a charming excursion into Anastacia's gentler mode. With a couple of Celine-style ballads ("Hold On," "I Dreamed You") that also lighten the mood, FREAK OF NATURE is a well-rounded effort.

Album Description

Second album from the Chicago-born female artist who combines pop, rock and R&B styles in her work. Seven of the tracks on 'Freak Of Nature' were produced by Rick Wake, who has previously worked with Diana Ross and Mariah Carey. The album was recorded in two months at Sony Music Studios in New York City.
