Franz Schubert's song cycle, WINTERREISE, is regarded not only as one of the high points of the genre but as the touchstone by which all singers of lieder are judged. The song cycle certainly became one of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's calling cards. To congratulate Fischer-Dieskau on his 80th birthday this year TDK has already released a very special concert recording of Schubert's DIE SCHONE MULLERIN. Now TDK is pleased to present this 1979 recording of WINTERREISE. The rehearsals are captured in the included bonus film, and we see the musicians speak about details of the song cycle. In a way, for today's singers, not only is Schubert's WINTERREISE the touchstone, but Fischer-Dieskau's approach to it has become authoritative. This recording of rehearsal and concert offer a glance into the emergence of a masterly interpretation of a masterwork.
