Review

Kerrang (16/10/04, p.40) - 4 (out of 5) - "...these adventurous approaches mostly work brilliantly... off-kilter genius in full flight"

Entertainment Weekly (p.68) - "[T]ricked out with atmospheric production touches..." - Grade: B+

Mojo (p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A] thrilling assignation with his past."

Uncut (p.140) - 4 stars out of 5 -"Black takes hold of some of the finest Pixies work and turns it inside out....This revisiting of his roots seems paradoxically to have expanded his horizons."

Magnet (p.86) - "It provides some stripped-down insight into the visceral brilliance of Black's early muse..."

The Wire (p.62) - "Black's pleasure at rediscovering these old songs in new company is infectious and makes the exercise engaging and worthwhile."

Product note

Personnel: Frank Black; Keith Moline (guitar); Andy Diagram (drums).
Recording information: 1986; 2003.
Released while the Pixies were in the midst of a massively successful 2004 reunion tour, FRANK BLACK FRANCIS is a fascinating two-disc set by the band's frontman Charles Thompson (AKA Frank Black and formerly Black Francis, hence the title). The first disc consists of solo acoustic demos recorded in 1986 by Thompson at producer Gary Smith's apartment. These tracks predate the Pixies full-band recordings, and they feature Black occasionally singing a lead guitar line or even lyrics intended for bassist Kim Deal (as on "I'm Amazed"). With their spare, acoustic-guitar-and-vocals setup, these songs highlight Thompson's wonderfully quirky singing and his remarkably deft six-string strumming. The banter from Thompson is also entertaining and revealing, as when he proclaims "This is the one we want to sound like Husker Du," before launching into "Caribou."
The second disc presents the head Pixie reworking the group's songs without the band itself. Here, Thompson frames Pixies classics in very different lights. Sure to raise eyebrows with many longtime fans, this disc of 2003 recordings nonetheless offers some intriguing interpretations, including a dreamy version of "Wave of Mutilation" and a entrancing, nearly 15-minute take on "Planet of Sound." While more of a curiosity than an essential set of songs, this "treated disc" provides a nice counterpoint to the revelatory "demo disc."
