John Sebastian's post-Lovin' Spoonful solo albums for Warner/Reprise Records (all of them reissued in 2007 on Collector's Choice) are rich with great narrative songwriting and stylistic variety. THE FOUR OF US, from 1971, runs the gamut from sunny AM radio fodder ("Apple Hill"), to blues and stride piano ("Black Snake Blues," "Sweet Muse"), to jazzy torch songs ("We'll See"), and ends with a lengthy folk suite that gives the album its title.
