Anyone who thinks of this band as actor Juliette Lewis's vanity project should already have been dissuaded by the relative merits of their first album. But all doubts are cleared away with this second release, which features anthemic, guitar-driven new wave songwriting and thoughtful, stirring lyrics. Lewis tackles the material with chops, verve, and conviction, mastering a dynamic sing/speak technique that channels equal parts Iggy Pop and Robert Plant. If this is just another acting role, so be it--it's an Oscar-winner.

Album Description

This is a hard, heavy rock album with Juliette Lewis' personality stamped all over it. With the addition of Dave Grohl on the drums, The Licks shape up to be a band to be reckoned with. Dave's influence is strong, but instead of being completely overwhelming, it actually enhances the sound and shows why he's one of the best drummers in the world. Unlike some other movie stars turned band members (Keanu Reeves/Johnny Depp), Juliette proves with this album that it can be done successfully and gives herself status as a rock goddess.
