Review

Spin (1/99, p.117) - "...has moments as boppy as anything on the radio..."

Product note

His Name Is Alive: Warren Defever, Karen Oliver, Chad Gilchrist, Trey Many, Scott Goldstein.
Additional personnel: Lovetta Pippen (vocals).
Michigan's His Name Is Alive bristles with art-damaged coyness, but great pop ultimately needs soul--an essence that can't be factored or graphed. Reducing "Good Vibrations" to a template is nothing but a parlor trick. Though FT. LAKE doesn't surrender the ghosts of HNIA's indie past altogether, when Detroit gospel queen Lovetta Pippin lays into "Everything Takes Forever," churning up a chunky, funky froth, the die has been cast for a new direction.
Once the surprise of hearing this erstwhile ethereal troupe pumping out full-blooded soul subsides, FT. LAKE soars. Warren Defever, HNIA's autonomous mastermind, graciously defers to Pippin and co-producer Steve King (Funkadelic, Aretha Franklin). "Wishing Ring" is a thrill, with Defever peeling off startling Eddie Hazel guitar leads and Pippin belting like a freshly minted Motor City diva. Pippin returns the reins to HNIA warbler Karin Oliver--who has picked up a few pointers from her soul sister and sounds much sultrier thereafter. She shines on "How It's Gotta Be," Martha & The Vandellas updated for the Amer-indie set. By FT. LAKE's end, Defever plunges into the shockadelic riff-arama of the final tracks, and HNIA has never sounded more "alive."
