FOREST FLOWER was recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios, New York on September 8, 1966 and live at the Monterey Jazz Festival on September 18, 1966. SOUNDTRACK was recorded live at Town Hall, New York on November 15, 1968. Originally released as 2 separate LPs. Includes liner notes by George Avakian.

All songs written by Charles Lloyd except "Sorcery" (Keith Jarrett), "Song Of Her" (Cecil McBee) and "East Of The Sun" (Brooks Bowman).

This pair of live albums from 1966 and 1968, respectively, features saxophonist/flautist Charles Lloyd with an outstanding lineup that includes pianist Keith Jarrett. A mix of experimental jazz and more straight-ahead blowing is presented here. For example, "East of the Sun" is an up-tempo scorcher from Lloyd's Monterey performance (on FOREST FLOWER), and this piece purposely self-destructs on each solo before morphing back into a burning bebop groove. The opening track, "Forest Flower - Sunrise," is a frenetic bossa nova tune that will put listeners on the edge of their seats. Jarrett and Lloyd offer up furious solos here, casting this usually delicate Brazilian style in a more hard-edged light.

The sound quality on SOUNDTRACK is inferior to FOREST FLOWER, but the performances here are equally stunning. Of these, the ballad "Voice in the Night" is the most engaging. On this tune, the group plays quite rubato, yet they seem to move as one; these musicians certainly understand the importance of band interplay. "Pre-Dawn" is completely avant-garde and is centered on the solo explorations of Lloyd, who squeaks and squawks out a series of complex bebop lines. Overall, This fiery two-for-one CD is one of Lloyd's best early efforts.
