Review

Down Beat (p.70) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Hutcherson's full, burnished tone ideally matches this languid set of standards....He perfectly controls the vibrato..."
JazzTimes (p.99) - "The atmosphere remains lush with lyricism and mainstream pleasures..."

Title Note

Personnel: Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone); Renee Rosnes (piano); Dwayne Burno (bass instrument); Al Foster (drums).

In the 1960s, Bobby Hutcherson was the in-house vibraphone player for Blue Note Records. Hutcherson performed on many of that label's groundbreaking albums including Eric Dolphy's OUT TO LUNCH, as well as leading several fine sessions himself. FOR SENTIMENTAL REASONS (2007) finds him in a mellower frame of mind but no less the fine vibist. REASONS is a ballad album in which Hutcherson's quartet (featuring the superb Rene Rosnes on piano) re-visits classic jazz and Great American Songbook standards. The mood is delicate and subdued, and the sounds exquisite, with Hutcherson utilizing an unusual sense of space between the notes, virtually suspending the melodies in air like raindrops. Things get a little more up-tempo on "Don't Blame Me" and the Latin-tinged "I Wish I Knew," but this doesn't upset the relaxed, late-night ambience of this wonderful set.

Ive been buying Bobbys music since Dialogue in the 60s and he has always been a great leader. For sentimental reasons is a fine collection of standards and I would recommend this to anyone who loves jazz and the vibraphone. He is truly a keeper of the flame.
