Entertainment Weekly (pp.78-9) - "[Westerberg] continues his recent artistic resurgence, crafting rough-and-tumble folk rock..." - Grade: B+
Uncut (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Another lo-fi batch of songs recorded in his Minneapolis basement....A record with as much heart as FOLKER only adds to the legacy."
Uncut (p.78) - Ranked #53 in Uncut's "Best New Albums of 2004" - "[O]ne of the most appealing and melodically potent releases of his solo career to date."
Magnet (p.127) - "FOLKER is a good record..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[The album] marks a major leap along the road to recovery....Westerberg's discernment hasn't failed him yet."

Title Note

FOLKER finds indie-rock legend Paul Westerberg still riding high on a remarkable streak of productivity that began in 2002 with STEREO. As on his previous few releases, the former Replacements frontman opts for a loose, no-frills (and sometimes downright lo-fi) sound; in this case, the album's off-the-cuff charm is only furthered by Westerberg serving as his own backing band. So if you're looking for world-class drumming, this is the wrong record for you, but if you're searching for a healthy dose of Westerberg's patented catchy melodies, you'll be more than satisfied.

The tongue-in-cheek "Jingle" opens FOLKER (not a folk album, despite the implication) with chiming guitars and multi-tracked vocals that proclaim "this is my single, this is my jingle." The tone shifts for "My Dad," a touching tribute to Westerberg's father that recalls some of the Replacements' finest songs. "Looking Up in Heaven" highlights Westerberg's way with a beautiful pop tune, while "Gun Shy" revels in his love for stripped-down, fuzzed-out, guitar-based rock. For Westerberg admirers, FOLKER is another excellent latter-day offering that shouldn't be overlooked.
