Product note

U.K. edition includes the exclusive bonus track "Be Bad For Me".
FOLKER finds indie-rock legend Paul Westerberg still riding high on a remarkable streak of productivity that began in 2002 with STEREO. As on his previous few releases, the former Replacements frontman opts for a loose, no-frills (and sometimes downright lo-fi) sound; in this case, the album's off-the-cuff charm is only furthered by Westerberg serving as his own backing band. So if you're looking for world-class drumming, this is the wrong record for you, but if you're searching for a healthy dose of Westerberg's patented catchy melodies, you'll be more than satisfied.
The tongue-in-cheek "Jingle" opens FOLKER (not a folk album, despite the implication) with chiming guitars and multi-tracked vocals that proclaim "this is my single, this is my jingle." The tone shifts for "My Dad," a touching tribute to Westerberg's father that recalls some of the Replacements' finest songs. "Looking Up in Heaven" highlights Westerberg's way with a beautiful pop tune, while "Gun Shy" revels in his love for stripped-down, fuzzed-out, guitar-based rock. For Westerberg admirers, FOLKER is another excellent latter-day offering that shouldn't be overlooked.
