Shirley Collins is arguably the most important female figure in the rise of the 1960s English folk revival. Collins traveled through the American South with famed musicologist Alan Lomax during the 1950s, collaborated with Davy Graham for the groundbreaking FOLK ROOTS, NEW ROUTES, and helped usher in the folk-rock movement of the late '60s. Her gorgeous voice has influenced generations of singers--from Natalie Merchant to Current 93--and her studies of folk culture and history remained essential well into the 21st century. Singer Billy Bragg has referred to Collins as "one of England's greatest national treasures."
