Native American powwow music is noted for the call-and-answer format of the songs, the constant beat of the drum, and the high-pitched style of ensemble singing, which often sounds like shrieking or wailing. Black Eagle, a group of brothers and cousins from the reserve of Jemez in New Mexico, has captured the intense and ecstatic mood of abandon and celebration with the songs on this album. Though incidental sounds make it sound like a live album, Black Eagle actually went to great lengths to maintain a feeling of spontaneity while recording in the studio. This album, which boasts colorful melodies and a subtle range of vocal pitches, creates a sense of being completely overtaken and possessed by music.
