On Terence Blanchard's FLOW, the hard-bop trumpeter steps outside his usual milieu to explore long-form composition. Divided into three sections entitled "Flow Part I," "Flow Part II, and "Flow Part III," this album focuses more on Blanchard's compositional skill than his improvisational prowess. This is not to say that FLOW is strict or rigid. Like the title implies, each track on this album is relaxed and fluid. Moreover, there is great musical interplay between Blanchard, drummer Kendrick Scott, and the always creative guitarist Lionel Loueke.

FLOW begins with the quasi-reggae "Flow, Part I," and is followed by "Wadagbe (Intro)," a showcase for Loueke's abstract guitar musings and vocal effects. Eventually, this music falls into a Freddie Hubbard-like modal style with movements such as "Benny's Tune" and "Child's Play." However, Blanchard and company never remain in any one genre for too long. For example, FLOW finishes with "Harvesting Dance," a tune that blends a funky bass riff with drum loops and a tambourine street beat. Throughout, Blanchard's full-bodied horn is supported by a vast array of colors, textures, and electronics. FLOW is tied together by Herbie Hancock's expert production.
