Title Note

Riley Lee is a grand master of the shakuhachi, a Japanese flute made from a single stalk of bamboo. Throughout its development, the flute has been used as a spiritual tool, particularly for Zen monks who have embraced the meditative quality of its sound. Capable of a wide range of tones, the shakuhachi can be as expressive as the human voice. On FLOATING WORLD, Riley Lee is joined by harpist Marshall McGuire to perform works of the French impressionists such as Ravel, Debussy, Faure, and a breathtaking interpretation of Erik Satie's "Trois Gymnopedies," which is separated into three separate tracks here. These treatments convey an emptiness and contemplative purity characteristic of the shakuhachi's sound. FLOATING WORLD also debuts new sacred work by Ann Boyd and duets by Japanese composers Fukuda and Koda. It is refreshing to hear these classical piano compositions performed with flute and harp. FLOATING WORLD seems almost effortless, where purifying textures hover in calming and cleansing modes. A welcomed addition to Riley Lee's already rich and varied catalogue, FLOATING WORLD is a meditation unto itself.
