Flight Of The Conchords (CD)

Flight of the Conchords is the name of a musical comedy duo from New Zealand. Actor-musicians Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement play, under their own names, hapless singer-songwriters attempting to make it big in the eat-or-be-eaten music world. Built around spot-on style parodies that spoof a diverse array of artists and genres--everything from David Bowie, Belle & Sebastian, and the Pet Shop Boys to loverman R&B, cabaret, and Rat Pack pop--Flight of the Conchords was a popular BBC radio program before evolving into a cult TV show on HBO. The group released the EP DISTANT FUTURE on Sub Pop in 2007.

Following up on 2007's debut EP, THE DISTANT FUTURE, the full-length FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS features songs from the first season of the New Zealand musical comedy duo's HBO series. Only the brilliant Barry White parody, "Business Time," is duplicated from the EP, although two of its live songs, "Robots" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room" (featuring the surefire come-on "You could be a part-time model/But you'd probably have to keep your normal job"), are given the full studio treatment.

What makes FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS better than either the average television soundtrack or the average musical comedy album is that even aside from the sharp wit and often hilarious lyrics (see: "A Kiss Is Not A Contract" and "Ladies of the World"), singers and multi-instrumentalists Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are genuinely gifted pop songwriters able to craft tuneful, memorable songs in a variety of styles. The genre parodies here, from the gibberish bossa nova "Foux da Fafa" and the deadpan rap clich‚s of "Hiphopoptamous Vs. Rhymenoceros" to the note-perfect impersonations of the Pet Shop Boys ("Inner City Pressure") and David Bowie ("Bowie"), are more than catchy enough to stand on their own.

Flight of The Conchords release their self titled Sub Pop venture, filled with the tracks we’ve tasted on their hit HBO show Flight of The Conchords.

An incredibly funny and talented parody duo from the bowels of New Zealand, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie power through this hilarious record with a clever hand and a slickly humorous arsenal of one off lyrics. Destined for greatness in the comedy world, they have already tasted fame with their Grammy nomination for their debut EP “The Distant Future”.

Like most of the emerging talent, the duo approaches their escalating fame with an indie outlook. A little taken aback by their success, Clement has mentioned that he is shocked to be making a living filling a position that he isn’t even suited for. Not very sociable and not exactly the life of the party he feels that maybe “entertainer” was not his destiny. Either way he gets the job done and done well. This album is sure to please the passengers as they’re taken for the flight of their lives.
