Review

Magnet (p.108) - "[The album] is great; Harper sings vivid and erudite lyrics with winning understatement and sets them to music that weds Dylanesque talking blues to an updated British Isles melodicism..."

Product note

Personnel includes: Roy Harper, Tony Visconti, The Nice.
Recorded principally at Abbey Road Studios, London, England in September 1969.
1970's FLAT BAROQUE AND BERSERK was Roy Harper's first album recorded in a proper studio with a real producer, and the difference between it and its two predecessors is immediately apparent. It's not just the vastly improved sound and Peter Jenner's sympathetic production which account for the strength of this album, though. This is Harper's first truly exemplary group of songs.
The range is remarkable, from the pure trad-folk of "Tom Tiddler's Ground" to the sledgehammering heavy rock of "Hell's Angels," on which Harper is backed by The Nice, rarely sounding more ferocious. Elsewhere, the haunting "Another Day" is one of Harper's sweetest and most lasting love songs, and the album's centerpiece, the caustic "I Hate the White Man" is one of Harper's most justifiably famous lyrics. Though this album's follow-up, STORMCOCK, is better known, FLAT BAROQUE AND BERSERK may have it beat as a collection of songs.
