Title Note

This album of discount flamenco was released by the Legacy International label. Manitas de Plata is billed by the liner notes as the "World's Greatest Flamenco Guitarist" (apparently ignoring players such as Tomatito and Paco de Luc¡a). While there's some solid playing from the star here, it's certainly not up to the title granted him. The guitar is heavily overshadowed by his shouts and accompanying jaleos and palmas. The guitar work isn't bad, but it's nothing compared to the key players of the genre. The sound quality adds to the misery of the album as well, as everything is accompanied by a slight scratchiness. While some roughness around the edges can often enhance the power of good flamenco, an overabundance of it can easily detract, especially when added to mediocre work. Listen to this one if you like, but only if no other flamenco can be found. Give the bigger stars and the larger labels their due in this case. ~ Adam Greenberg
