Flaco Jimenez Artist Snapshot:

Accordion master Flaco Jimenez is the foremost living exponent of Tex-Mex music. A student of San Antonio's tejano music scene (in which his father, Santiago, was a major player), Jimenez did much to raise the music's profile thanks to his work in the 1970s and '80s with, among others, Dr. John, Ry Cooder, and particularly Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet. In 1989, Jimenez and Sahm, along with Freddy Fender and Augie Meyers, formed the Tex-Mex supergroup the Texas Tornados.

One of the most unusual musical melting pots in the country, the Texas-Mexico border has given rise to many gifted talents that draw from both Mexican and American musical traditions. Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, and Freddy Fender all bounced back and forth between tejano and conjunto and blues and rock & roll. Nobody, however, embodies the spirit of the region more than accordion master Flaco Jimenez. Born in San Antonio in 1939, Flaco was the son of tejano innovator Santiago Jimenez, as well as an avid student of country, blues, German polka, and later rock & roll.

This 1988 collection, FLACO'S AMIGOS, is a paean to the diversity he enjoyed near the border. The album switches from more traditional accordion fare sung in Spanish like "La Tumba Sera El Final" ("It Will All End in the Grave") and "Mi Primer Amor" ("My First Love") to star-studded collaborations sung in English. Peter Rowan updates his ode to pot-smuggling, "The Free Mexican Airforce," and Ry Cooder makes a rare mandolin appearance on the instrumental "Jeannette."( Strangely, long-time Brian Wilson cohort Van Dyke Parks sits in on piano for some tracks too.) FLACO'S AMIGOS is a great introduction to an essential American musical legend.
