Title Note

Personnel includes: Jerry Jeff Walker (vocals, guitar); Pete Wade (electric guitar, dobro); David Bromberg, Mack Guyden, Wayne Moss (guitar); Weldon Myrick (pedal steel); David Briggs, Paul Harris (piano, organ); Bob Wilson, Hargus Robbins (piano); Charlie McCoy (organ, vibraphone); Norbert Putnam (bass); Kenny Buttrey (drums).

Recorded at WBAI, New York, New York and in Davidson County, Tennessee between 1967 and 1969.

Jerry Jeff Walker's third solo album is a bit of a stylistic mish-mash and a fairly downbeat affair. In fact, with the exception of the lighthearted quasi-ragtime album closer, "Born to Sing a Dancin' Song," the whole thing approaches Leonard Cohen territory. The inherent weightiness can be gleaned from song titles like "Dead Men Got No Dreams."

An unusual song, "Help Me No" excoriates "Those cats upstairs who handle my songs" for "How they string me along" and is uncharacteristically decorated with psychedelic fuzz guitar. The delicate ballad "Seasons Change" is highlighted with a lovely piano-and-dobro arrangement. The standout track, however, is the original demo of Walker's best known song, "Mr. Bojangles." The spare treatment it receives draws out the poignancy of the tune, making it far superior to the more famous official studio version.
