Norway's Dead to this World remember when black metal was in its infancy, and their relentless chainsaw sound harks back to that sound. Utterly fat-free and focused, FIRST STRIKE FOR SPIRITUAL RENEWANCE grinds with purpose throughout its 10 tracks, and aside from the epic-length "Hammer of the Gods," keeps things reasonably brief. "Night of the Necromancer" is as sinister as SEASONS IN THE ABYSS-era Slayer, "Into the Light (Baphomet Rising)" piles layers of shattering guitar on top of a stern rhythm section, and "To Free Death Upon Them" rages powerfully, roaring like a motorbike's engine.
