Title Note

Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (08/28/1999-09/18/1999).

The New York-based Ganz Brothers called this post-bop/hard bop CD First Steps for two reasons. First, there is the family connotation -- tenor saxophonist Steven Ganz and guitarist Keith Ganz really are brothers. Second, First Steps is their first studio recording as a group; even though the siblings played their share of live gigs together, this 1999 session marked their "first steps" as recording artists. To their credit, the Ganz Brothers wrote almost all of the material themselves. The only thing on First Steps that wasn't written by Steven and/or Keith is the overdone Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer standard "My Shining Hour"; relying on the usual bop clich‚s, the Ganz Brothers don't bring anything new or different to this warhorse -- the siblings' pianoless quartet (which also includes bassist George Mitchell and drummer Vinson Valega) gives us yet another predictable, by-the-book version of a standard that literally hundreds of jazz artists have recorded over the years. But the Ganz Brothers are more memorable when they embrace their own songs, which range from the innocent title track and the Brazilian-flavored "Bossa for Frank" to the mysterious "Debbie in the Dark" and the angular "The Creeper." The Ganz Brothers aren't bad composers, and when all is said and done, the listener remembers their original stuff -- not their conventional reading of "My Shining Hour." First Steps falls short of mind-blowing, but overall, it's a decent, straight-ahead outing that underscores the "Young Lions'" possibilities as both composers and soloists. ~ Alex Henderson
