Review

Entertainment Weekly (No. 849, p.73) - "...[C]reaky country-gothic to jittery free-form jazz and fuzz-rock spasms..." - Grade: B+
The Wire (p.56) - "With every song, Rayposa searches both his soul and the myths of a mythical past."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Castanets' second foray into odd, sun-shy noir-Americana....[A] slice of prairie-gloom..."

Title Note

Castanets: Daniel Carter, Nathan Hubbard, Sufjan Stevens, Rafter Roberts, Chris Schlarb, Bridgit DeCook, Nathan Deiffs, Justice Constantine, Orlando Greenhill, Heidi Diehl, G. Lucas Crane, Sayard Egan, Raymond Raposa, Gabriel Sundy, Jarvis Taveniere.

The Castanets' sophomore release (put out by Sufjan Stevens's Asthmatic Kitty label) expands on the spectral melancholy of their first album, but feels even more rigorously constructed, conceived, and intense. The gentle, acoustic rattling of "Into the Night," the album's opener, suggests that FIRST LIGHT'S FREEZE is not going to be a sunshine-filled walk in the park. Yet the album is engaging from beginning to end, with moody, attenuated pop ("A Song Is Not the Song of the World"), dark, backwoods folk ("Good Friend, Yr Hunger"), and unsettling avant-noise generated by guitar and electronics ("Evidence"). With its existential themes, inventive instrumentation and arrangements, and stylistic variety, FIRST LIGHT'S FREEZE is an assured second album that commands attention.
