Percussionist/composer Roberto Juan Rodriguez was born in Cuba, lived in Florida, and has a background in various New York City music scenes. (For example, he played with Paul Simon and Ruben Blades.) This disc is Rodriquez's soundtrack to the same-titled film, THE FIRST BASKET, a documentary film about the ethnic origins of the NBA. Rodriguez combines traditional Hebrew melodies, jazz, funk, assorted Latin rhythms (son, rhumba, salsa), and bits of rock for a kaleidoscopic, magical-mystery tour of NYC neighborhoods and cultures that overlap and intermingle for a truly American experience.
