Review

Spin (3/96, p.112) - 8 - Very Good - "...Unabashed classicists (count the Dylan references and check out those majestic Television guitar solos), Silkworm songs are so well-crafted that when something drops out of the mix...you can feel it in the pit of your stomach..."
Magnet (p.72) - "Firewater spilled a litany of poetic, booze-drenched tales of woe....Fear. betrayal, forgiveness and the bonds of friendship received equal play in these tough, spare numbers."
Option (7-8/96, p.131) - "...Steve Albini coaxes a sound out of this trio that is hard, clean and tough as stainless steel....The ballads sound nearly Irish or Appalachian; the songs are cryptic, sparse and oddly tuned; and Midgett and Cohen can each spit out lyrics like they're Shane MacGowan..."
Melody Maker (3/30/96, p.41) - "...evocative, funny and painfully drink-inspired songs about, well, drink mainly..."
NME (Magazine) (3/2/96, p.44) - 7 (out of 10) - "...The lyrics might put tears in your beer, but the tunes have grabbed the wheel and are heading back to the garage. Forlorn words and earnest guitars [abound]..."

Title Note

Silkworm: Andy Cohen (electric guitar, vocals); Tim Midgett (bass, acoustic guitar, vocals); Michael Dahlquist (drums).

Recorded in Missoula, Montana and Chicago, Illinois.

With Andy Cohen's electric guitar ranging (and raging) freely between distorted gobs of rhythmic crunch and open-ended lead splatter, Silkworm are the punk-rockers most likely to be mistaken for Neil Young. Or Television. Or, give 'em a few years, Son Volt. Pick your era, pick your country-punk-rock-Dylan-influenced-loud-guitar demon; Silkworm has come up with a liquor-filled, bile-spilling record with the guts to stand with any of them.

The 16-song sprawl of FIREWATER, which finds the band reduced to a trio with the departure of Joel Phelps, covers a lot of ground--from the hum-along garage rock chorus of "Cannibal Cannibal" and the country-rock style of "Tarnished Angel," to the punky blues of "Wet Firecracker" and the acoustic indie-rock travelogue "Miracle Mile" (in the middle of which Cohen suddenly lets loose with the free-est of all his electric solos). Drummer Michael Dahlquist pulls everything back into punk-rock territory with his no-nonsense tom-tom gallop, while Cohen and Tim Midgett spit out enough smart put-downs to make any literate rocker smile.
