Title Note

Crucial Conflict: Wildstyle, Kilo, Coldhard, Never.

Additional personnel: Q-Ball, Toi, Tasha Keller, Sheena Lee, T-Babe (background vocals).

Engineers: Wildstyle (tracks 1-12, 14-15); Ernie Allen (track 13).

Samples include "Pusher Man" (as performed by Curtis Mayfield), "I'll Stay" (as performed by George Clinton), "Spaced" (as performed by Stanley Turrentine) and "Devika" (as performed by Lonnie Liston Smith And The Cosmic Echoes).

Straight outta K-Town, on Chicago's west side, here comes Crucial Conflict, trying to carve out a niche in the heavily-populated hip-hop world. Crucial Conflict succeeds, thanks mostly to a no-nonsense approach and a unique, machine-gun rapping style known as "snappin." Band members Never (short for Never Ending Violent Emotional Rage), Wildstyle, Cold Hard and Kilo have managed to adopt a musical style somewhere in between the two coasts: not the laid-back, groove-oriented West Coast approach, but definitely not the more energetic, East Coast hardcore method, either.

CC's technique is probably best defined by both its subject matter (illicit substances and gun violence), and by the sound of the hit single "Hay." "Hay" has a rough, but still musically appealing, backing track, and rhymes that explode in bursts of high-powered, rapid-fire speech: "Took another pull, ridin' Red Bull/Got the goofies, can't stop grinnin'." With a sense of humor, a fresh style and talent to burn, this quartet should be on the scene for some time to come.
