With this 1994 release Caetano Veloso pays tribute to many of the most renowned Latin American songwriters, such as Argentina's Astor Piazolla and Cuba's Armando Orefiche. His Spanish singing is sublime, and many of his interpretations and arrangements breathe new life into these classic songs. Some selections here feature slick production and elaborate instrumentation, such as the horn sections incorporated into "Capullito de Aleli" and "Tonada de Luna Llena"; however "Maria Bonita" features Veloso singing solo with just an acoustic guitar accompaniment.

Perhaps because it displays his reverence for tradition while still expressing his individuality, FINA ESTAMPA is one of Veloso's more successful '90s releases. Although something of a departure from TROPICALIA 2 and the other records immediately preceding it, predictability is hardly par for the course with Caetano Veloso.
