Not to be confused with the '90s college rock group of the sort-of same name (sans an extra "g"), this Louisiana sextet is all feminine charm and old-fashioned musical chops. Perhaps inspired by a wave of like-minded bands such as O'Death and seeking a retro fix a little more substantive than the previous decade's swing craze, the Figs' debut unpeels to reveal plenty of Carter Sisters-worthy harmonies and uptempo honky tonk and bluegrass. But its secret lies in a bit of attitude, via the occasional plugged-in electric blues solo-ing and sassy warnings not to "call me darlin'/don't call me dear/if you are not sincere." THE FIGS is an exercise in how to modernize your influences with a balanced of accomplished musicianship and unapologetic personality.
