Uncut (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[S]he was loading her love of the traditional with the sting of protest, all delivered in that remarkable, crystal soprano."

1965's FIFTH ALBUM was the last of Judy Collins' traditional-style acoustic drummerless folk albums. By the time of its release, Dylan had already gone electric, the Byrds were inventing folk-rock, and Collins was well aware of the change in the air.

Her version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" is one of her finest Dylan covers, and excellent covers of Richard Farina's "Pack Up Your Sorrows," Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain," and Phil Ochs' "In the Heat of the Summer" pay tribute to new, younger talent. Other highlights include a moving rendition of Eric Andersen's civil rights allegory "Thirsty Boots" and the simply exquisite "Coming of the Roads." A fine pair of traditional ballads, "Lord Gregory" and "Greenwater Side," complement the composed material. The arrangements are simple, yet never sparse, with a delightful subtlety and grace. This is as good as '60s folk gets.
