Review

Uncut (p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[B]old, inventive, sonically daring."
Magnet (p.106) - "Pollard hews closest to GBV's grand and fuzzy pop on solo records that bear his name, and FICTION MAN is no exception."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[I]t has a spritely, playful air, its triumphs more memorable and daring..."

Title Note

Personnel: Robert Pollard (vocals, guitar); Chris Sheehan (piano); Scott Bennet, Todd Tobias.

Between fronting Guided By Voices and maintaining his numerous side projects, the insanely prolific Robert Pollard is usually ready to record another album by the time his fans finish brushing their teeth in the morning. FICTION MAN (2004) delivers what those fans have come to expect--witty, eclectic power-pop informed by a lo-fi indie aesthetic, a love of 1970s arena rock, and a penchant for Beatlesque hooks. Pollard's frequent collaborator Todd Tobias not only produced this outing, but also arranged the music and handled all the instrumental chores.

Not surprisingly, FICTION MAN will sound familiar to GBV fans. The record's combination of off-kilter folk snippets ("Losing Usage"), Black Sabbath heft ("Built to Improve"), dreamy psychedelia ("Sea of Dead"), art rock ("Trial of Affliction and Light Sleeping"), and pristine pop melodies ("Children Come On") goes back as far as GBV's decade-spanning history. Pollard, as always, is a poet of process, and his knack for channeling rock's past through a cut-and-paste postmodern sensibility (not to mention witty, catchy songwriting) is full on display here. While newcomers are encouraged to check out some of GBV's seminal albums first (BEE THOUSAND is an alt-rock essential), the Pollard faithful will find much to love in FICTION MAN.
