Review

New Age Retailer (Vol. 18, No. 5, pp.76-8) - ?[A]n excellent choice for people who like a mixture of musical styles.?

Title Note

Personnel includes: Mary Youngblood (Native American flute); Joanne Shenandoah, Bill Miller (vocals); Tom Wasinger (guitar, zither, melodica, bass, percussion); Ian Anderson (flute).

Following up her Grammy-award winning 2003 album, BENEATH THE RAVEN MOON, Mary Youngblood continues to push the boundaries of Native American music with her most personal album to date, FEED THE FIRE. For the first time Youngblood performs on piano and vocals in addition to her trademark flutes (many of which are handmade for her especially by Native American artisans). The band on this recording is made up of cello, percussion, and drums, which add a deeper resonance and more robust sound than has been heard on her previous albums.

Ian Anderson of the rock group Jethro Tull sits in on a few tracks, and his unique, lyrical flute work provides a beautiful counterpoint to Youngblood's more rhythmic and aggressive performances. Although, aggressive isn't necessarily Youngblood's style. She effortlessly creates beautiful, touching music that hangs in the air like clouds, affecting the mood of a piece with only her breath. Often compared to Native American flute legend Marina Raye, Youngblood could be considered the more musically ambitious of the two. She is an artist willing to bare her soul and use her music as her personal expression. FEED THE FIRE is a beautiful recording of subtle grace and haunting ambience that is sure to become a classic.
