R. Carlos Nakai Artist Snapshot:

Southwestern flautist R. Carlos Nakai has left his unique mark on the Native American music canon. He is not an archivist of traditional songs, but rather a synthesist of new sounds, fusing the spirit of his Navajo ancestors with modern sensibilities. He composes soaring melodies for solo wooden flute (of his own design) evoking the terrible beauty of the desert landscape, adding jazzy, ambient, and New Age elements. He's been recording since the early 1980s, and his solo outings and his collaborations with pianist/composer Peter Kater, flautist Paul Horn, and others have met great critical and popular success.

Review

Down Beat (10/95, p.62) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "The most prominent and prolific voice on Native American flute, Nakai draws on the traditional themes and instrumentation of his Navajo-Ute heritage, achieving remarkably expressive results from the cedar flute..."
Dirty Linen (2-3/96, p.85) - "...This release takes the traditional flute into a new arena of music....When the cedar flute blends with the lyraharp guitar, didgeridoo, balafon, tablas, and pow pow drums, a most unusual, original, and amazing sound comes forth..."

Title Note

Full performer name: R. Carlos Nakai/William Eaton/William Clipman.

Personnel: R. Carlos Nakai (flute); William Eaton (guitar); William Clipman (percussion).

Producers: R. Carlos Nakai, William Eaton, William Clipman, Robert Doyle.

Is it thunder or Will Clipman's drums that open this album? Either way, the beginning of "Where Giants Walk" portends the big theme of this record: nature in its terrifying beauty and power. As on R. Carlos Nakai's many other best-selling recordings, his flute can imitate a gently circling mourning dove, a fierce raven, a feather on the wind, and, on several tracks here, a raging river. Clipman and William Eaton provide quiet but crucial support on percussion and guitar, respectively.

Of course Nakai masterfully communicates abstract emotions as well, as on the highly danceable and slightly menacing "Restless Spirits." "Sonoran Raga" is an interesting departure: Eaton's sitar and some choice Indian percussion create the bed for a snakily enticing melody that suggests desert heat and Biblical temptation. "Stealing Thunder" closes the album in as dramatic and drum-heavy way as it began.
