On its debut album, the Austin band I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness stakes out the more crepuscular corners of indie rock last inhabited by British New Romantics in the early 1980s. Slowly building in intensity, "The Ghost" is an exercise in Gothic angst, while the herky-jerky dance rhythms of "According to Plan" similarly invoke black eyeliner and puffy sleeved shirts, and "The Owl" could almost be a Siouxsie & The Banshees outtake. On the title track, brooding synthesizers conjure damp, misty wastelands, and the band's singer and lyricist Christian Goyer summons the undead shades of Robert Smith and Modern English.
