Gabriel Fauré: "Requiem", Op. 48; "Cantique de Jean Racine", Op. 11

The remarkable Paris-based chamber choir Accentus, under the direction of its founder Laurence Equilbey, performs the beloved and sublime "Requiem" of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) on a new release that also includes the French composer's "Cantique de Jean Racine". The "Requiem", one of the most popular sacred works in the repertoire, is heard here in the original version of 1893, which was re-discovered in 1980. Accentus and Equilbey are joined on the recording by members of the Orchestre National de France, soprano Sandrine Piau, and baritone Stéphane Degout.

Laurence Equilbey founded Accentus in order to perform the major works of the "a cappella" repertoire and engage with contemporary creation. Accentus is today an ensemble of 32 professional singers, and appears regularly at leading French and international festivals.

Accentus has a growing and critically acclaimed discography for naive. Its recording "Transcriptions", which has sold more that 100,000 copies, was a Grammy Award nominee in 2004, and received a Disque d'Or in January 2008. Its Schoenberg recording with the Ensemble Intercontemporain (2005) received a Midem Classical Award in 2006. Haydn's "Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross" with the Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin (2006) is considered a benchmark version. The choir's most recent releases were a second volume of "Transcriptions" (2006) and a recording of Liszt's "Via Crucis" with Brigitte Engerer (2007). Earlier this year, director Andy Sommer's mesmerizing film about Accentus, "Transcriptions", was Gramophone's DVD of the month. Accentus received the Grand Prix Radio Classique de la Découverte in 2001 and was voted Ensemble of the Year in the Victoires de la Musique Classique in 2002 and 2005.
