Review

Uncut (p.91) - 3 star out of 5 -- "[A] freewheeling jumble of organic sci-fi blues, psychedelic loungecore instrumentals and kindergarten grooves that sometimes suggest Gorillaz with more bite and brains."

Title Note

Personnel: Mike Ladd (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Damali Young (guitar, drums); Jaleel Bunton (guitar); Vijay Iyer (piano, keyboards); High Priest (keyboards, synthesizer); Gymkhana (keyboards, percussion, programming); Dave "Eastwood" Sztanke (keyboards); Raz Mesinai (percussion).

Mike Ladd's music is a riddle, wrapped in an enigma, wrapped in hip-hop, wrapped in grainy funk. It's the product of a feverish lyrical imagination, a fierce intelligence, and a panoramic musical vision. Ostensibly begun as a concept album about the eccentric 20th-century black religious cult leader, the Reverend General Jealous Divine, FATHER DIVINE actually spans cable TV on "Awful Raw," the city of Paris on "Apartment C2," and a youthful crush on "Barney's Girl." There's also a sublimely hypnotic hip-hop Booker T-meets-the-Meters-style instrumental in "Crooner Island." But ultimately, Ladd's keyboard-layered, dub-oriented hip-hop defies easy categorization--it's simply an irrepressible outburst of musical creativity, and a rare delight.
