His sixth solo album since leaving the legendary New Zealand band the Clean, David Kilgour's THE FAR NOW weaves back and forth between off-kilter solo acoustic pop songs and quiet full-band rockers. On songs like "Sun of God" and "Under Clean," his understated, multi-tracked vocals and brusque strumming resemble Robyn Hitchcock's best solo acoustic work, while the band stuff--"BBC World," "We Really Can't Get Along"--sounds like updated Clean tracks, musical naivete married to world-weary lyrics. The stand-out, "On Your Own" is a heartbreaking waltz-time lament to the gods of loneliness that would be a downer if it weren't so gorgeous.
