Review

"More exquisite and wrenching storytelling from Manhattan-based Irish writer McCann..., who packs more passion and heartbreak into these two stories and novella, about the Troubles and children coping with hard times, than most writers can generate in books three times the length....Masterful."

"No more beautifully cadenced and moving collection of short fiction is likely to appear this year than Colum McCann's provocatively titled EVERYTHING IN THIS COUNTRY MUST."

Publisher's note

In Everything in This Country Must, Colum McCann turns to the Troubles in Northern Ireland and reveals the reverberations of political tragedy in the most intimate lives of children and their parents. In the title story, a teenage girl must choose between allegiance to her Catholic father and gratitude to the British soldiers who have saved the family's horse. The young hero of "Hunger Strike," a novella, tries to replicate the experience of his uncle, an IRA prisoner on hunger strike. And in "Wood," a small boy does his part for the Protestant marches, concealing his involvement from his blind father.

Annotation

In three stories, this book depicts the wrenching conflicts ordinary Irish people feel as a result of their colonial Troubles, focusing on the tensions between people's attempts to live normal lives and the insistent reminders of the Troubles all around them.
